【主题】Homophily in social media and news polarization(joint with Luis Abreu (TSE))
【摘要/Abstract】There is large evidence about homophily, i.e., the tendency of people to interact more with similar others than with disparate others. This is also well documented in the context of news sharing on online social networks. In this paper, we study how the choice of ideological bias of news media is affected by the degree of homophily of readers. For this purpose, we consider a model in which a profit-seeking media firm chooses the ideological bias of its news in an environment where, after reading the news, direct consumers have an opportunity to share it with their followers on a online social network. We study the firm's strategy which maximizes the breadth of news sharing and also the one maximizing the depth of news sharing. We provide conditions under which each of the two strategies leads to news polarization.
