【摘要】Death of a loved one is one of the most traumatic events that one can experience in life. The adverse health effect of bereavement has been well documented. The majority of the previous studies, however, have investigated the associations between bereavement and health in western countries. In countries where familial ties are strong and work as an important channel for social support and resource allocation, loss of a spouse or child might have more salient and persistent effect on health. This study, using data from the first three waves and the Life History Survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), investigates the relationships between bereavement, both loss of a spouse and loss of a child, and health and health behaviors for older parents in China. Child loss seems to influence mothers and fathers similarly both in the short run and in the long run. Widowhood, however, appears to influence widowers and widows quite differently: recent widowhood is associated with a larger number of worse health outcomes and health behaviors for the widowers than for the widows, but the opposite is true in the case of long-term widowhood. The son preference is not that obvious for the older parents in contemporary China: we can perhaps conclude that there is still some preference for sons among mothers but not among fathers. We also examine the potential buffering effects of social support, including not only receiving but also providing support.
