Master's Program
We offer master's degrees in economics with 2 years of study that emphasize both theory and its application to real world. The SOE master's program is one of the most selective master's programs in the country that attract bright and energetic students from all parts of China.
To get a master degree, students are required to complete six core courses: two-semester advanced micro economics and two-semester macro economics as well as two-semester econometrics at the Ph.D. level.
Our graduates are highly competitive in the job market with a high percentage of students going into consulting, finance, new technologies and government agencies.
Doctoral Program
For doctoral studies, SOE is dedicated to helping students acquire the skills for undertaking complicated tasks either in academic work or in other settings, especially in information gathering, synthesizing ideas and critical thinking.
We offer two doctoral programs that confer doctoral degrees in economics:
     — One enrolls students who already have a master's degree. The program is 4 years.
     — The other, also called the Unified Master-Ph.D. Program, enrolls students with a bachelor's degree and confers a master's degree en route. The program lasts for 5 years and is highly selective in its admission and challenging in its requirement of coursework and thesis writing.
The doctoral programs are similar to the economics doctoral programs in first-rate US universities. Students in the program take ten core courses and two (or three in the unified master-Ph.D. program) sequences of field courses (i.e. 4 or 6 courses). The ten core courses are Mathematical Economics, Advanced Micro Economics Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, Advanced Macro Economics Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, and Advanced Econometrics Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ. The total length of study for these core courses is half-year longer than that in typical universities in North America. As in the common international practice, the selection of Ph.D. candidates is by the comprehensive exams.
Doctoral students have opportunities to work with professors as their TA, RA or co-author, in addition to receiving guidance from their advisors and attending weekly seminars and workshops.
